The Middle Colonies

1. The Dutch colony of New Netherland became the English colony of New York.
The Dutch settlers traded in furs and made the colony prosperous; England wanted to take it over.
In 1664, English ships invaded New Amsterdam's harbor; Governor Peter Stuyvesant surrendered.
The colony was renamed New York in honor of the Duke of York.

The colony had fertile farmland and rich resources.
New Jersey allowed religious freedom.
3. Pennsylvania was founded as an experiment in religious tolerance.
To protect his Quaker friend William Penn from persecution in England, King Charles II granted him a large tract of land in North America.
Penn welcomed people of different religions to settle in Pennsylvania.
This policy of religious tolerance attracted settlers from many countries.

9. Pennsylvania Dutch - name given to German settlers in Pennsylvania because of a mispronunciation of the word Deutsch (German).
